E-Bay removing PS3 auctions!

Posted by Jason Triplett Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Yes, the rumors are TRUE! E-Bay and Sony are teaming up to yank all those nifty E-Bay auctions off the net! Already, E-Bay has removed over a dozen since this morning's post, some of which were in the range of $2000 to $4000.

Is this legal? Tell us what YOU think!

Okay, um... why? Why are they doing this? A pre-order ticket is a "guaranteed" PS3, right? So there's nothing to stop them from being sold in a totally legal fashion, correct?

Yes it is legal. It is called capitalism.. If someone wants to pay that much, let him/her. Nobody is forcing anyone to pay that much so I see no problem with it..

Of course it's legal. First of all, eBay owns eBay (duh) and so can do whatever the fuck they want (go look in the Terms of Service, it's all there), and second of all, nobody listing a PS3 actually has a PS3 yet, and you're not allowed to sell stuff that you don't have.

Good!! I hate people that do that. It's not right. Ebay is not so other people can make money off of desperate people. People that buy something just for the sole purpose of selling it on ebay are scalpers and THAT is the thing that should be illegal!

Those desparate early adoptors who are willing to drop $3k are utter and complete DUMBASSES. I say let them buy 1st Generation PS3s that have firmware errors and the like. If they didn't learn from the PS2 and XBox launches 5+ years ago, then they never will. Nobody's putting a gun to their head to spend that much money.

actually, most places are saying that preorders are not guarenteed. Many stores have taken sixteen preorders, even though most stores will only get eight consoles.

It's nice to see that those who didn't decide pre-order complaining about how unfair it is. You have a decision not to buy it.

I would bet money that given the chance they would do the same exact thing. And if you wouldn't I would love to buy your ps3 pre-orders from you at cost..... and sell them on ebay.

obviously it's legal. the place that the people ordered the PS3s from does the same thing. they buy low. sell high. ever hear of suikoden 2? know how much GS/EB gave for it on average? $20 - 25. know how much they sold it for? $60. over double the profit.

my friends, it's called capitalism. it is completely legal.

Yes, it's legal for eBay to pull the auctions as another person stated.

Let's also not neglect the fact that in order to pick up a system at EB/Gamestop you have to verify your identity, pre-order or not, so selling their pre-order tickets is worthless to the buyer.

Rumors are not true. It has to do with posting a Buy Now when you can't get the item within 30 days which is against eBay policy.

actually, ebay is there for people to make money off of other people.
people that buy stuff to sell on ebay are smart if they buy the right stuff to sell.

some of you people are truly stupid...

    A) you CAN sell a pre-order on ebay, as long as the item ships within 30 days of the auction's end (read the ebay guidelines)

    and
    B) the reason EBAY is around is to sell stuff and MAKE money.. seriously. people are obviously willing to pay that much for a ps3, dont you think if they took away ebay ps3s that you WILL still be waiting, because hte people with ridiculous amounts of money WOULD have pre-orders anyway.

Additionally, Ebay is going to be very happy once the PS3 sales fall within the TOS... they get a sizable cut of every item sold!

For those that thinks it should be illegal to resell the PS3. Not only you should get familized with the laws of supply and demand, it is also called free market, which exist in a democratic society. Please do not forget, this is also another way for low income students to make a buck by lining up and selling the units to the New York stockbrokers out there that would be able to afford to pay these prices.
Ebay may have their motives but DO NOT be so ignorant to expect that in a democratic society that this banning will be tolerated. I can't wait to see another online auction site to spring up to sell all the stuff that Ebay will be disallowing in the future.
